Deep: The Peter Murphy Residency

Deep : The Peter Murphy Residency

August 5, 2019

Le Poisson Rouge

Peter Murphy’s New York City residency has been epic series of memorable nights, with fans packing Le Poisson Rouge in the village for a series of specialty shows, focused on individual albums, greatest hits, a Bauhaus retrospective and even a David Bowie night.

With the mega talented lineup including Mark Gemini Thwaite on guitar, Emilio Zef China on bass and violin and Marc Slutsky on drums, Murphy was in fine form for the “Deep” show. Jovially joking with the audience , Murphy’s engagement with the crowd was strong. In fact, he seemed the most at-ease on stage in years, truly enjoying the energy that was pulsating back to him from the audience. At 62, Murphy is still lanky and lean, a handsome form covering every edge of the stage effortlessly.

Even though the lineup was no surprise, as it followed the “Deep” album, the performances felt new and inspired. In the sweaty, intimate space of the venue, it was like watching Peter Murphy from your own living room, a surreal and amazing experience. The Encore of “His Circle and Hers Meet” was a blast.

Note: Slightly over a week later and with a handful of shows remaining in this residency, Peter Murphy suffered a heart attack. Thankfully, he recovered and was released by Lenox Hill Hospital. The shows that weren’t performed have been rescheduled for January at Le Poisson Rouge.
