The Psychedelic Furs and Gary Numan at The Paramount, October 11, 2025
By Christine Connallon

The 80s were many eons ago but the fans who once vibed to WLIR-FM and still get their new wave fix on Sirius XM’s First Wave were in full force to celebrate two iconic musical forces on a recent Saturday night. Crunchy fall leaves littered New York Avenue as a crowd of Gen X and Baby Boomers snaked their way down the block, anticipating a night of musical joy with the Psychedelic Furs and special guest, Gary Numan.
With palpable electricity in the air and vintage t-shirts that proclaim loyalty to the Clash, PIL and the Sex Pistols, the hybrid seating in the orchestra was filling up quickly while others watched from the bars along the sides, from a standing area at the back of the main level or upstairs from the balcony.

First up, was an electronic treat in the form of Gary Numan. Best known for his smash hit “Cars,” the English singer floored the crowd with a powerful set that paid homage to the dark wave genre. Perpetually in motion, the 67 year old Numan danced and cut a sharp form in the theatrical stage lighting. The only complaint heard about Numan’s high-energy set is that an hour wasn’t long enough for the enjoyment he gave the crowd. Let’s hope he returns to the states soon as a headliner as his talents warrant such a spotlight.

After a short break, The Psychedelic Furs took the stage and the hearts of the crowd. Lead singer Richard Butler continues to shine, his signature moves so recognizable and fluid, full of charisma. He was flanked by his brother Tim Butler on bass guitar and Rich Good on guitar, strength on strings and fixtures of the Furs live shows who engage with the crowd and keep the show flowing. Kicking off with “Heaven” and “President Gas,” the bar was raised high but the hits kept coming and the audience responded to hearing their favorites.
The 80s may be gone but the music is never forgotten. With tours of this magnitude and fans clamoring to revisit this unmistakable time in musical history, it’s exciting to dream of what’s next as these songs stick in our heads, long after the venue doors close behind us.
